Among these mysteries is ErraTas—sometimes written as Erratas—an obscure online puzzle that has become something of a cult legend among internet sleuths. Unlike many internet hoaxes, ErraTas never offered a clear objective. There was no prize, no official explanation, and no satisfying conclusion, only fragments. And questions.
The first appearance
Pinpointing ErraTas's exact origin is surprisingly difficult. The mystery emerged gradually rather than explosively. Sometime during the mid-to-late 2010s, internet users began discovering an unusual website containing almost no conventional content. There was no introduction, no explanation an no indication of who had created it. Cicada 3301 followed a structured progression, with puzzles leading to new puzzles and eventually to real-world locations. Although its creators remain unidentified, the puzzles demonstrated careful planning and a clear sense of direction. ErraTas felt different. It was less organized and more abstract, more philosophical than procedural. Rather than rewarding correct answers, it often seemed to generate additional uncertainty. Many investigators concluded that ErraTas was never intended to be "solved" in the traditional sense.
Artificial intelligence or human creativity?
As artificial intelligence became increasingly sophisticated, new theories emerged. Some suggested that ErraTas had been generated, at least partially, by an experimental AI. The fragmented writing, the symbolic associations and the apparent lack of narrative consistency resembled machine-generated creativity more than conventional storytelling to some observers. If ErraTas was an ARG, it remains one of the least conventional ever created.
What became of ErraTas?

Archived versions preserve much of the material, but it is impossible to know whether the surviving content represents the project in its original form. No creator has publicly claimed responsibility and no definitive explanation has ever been offered. Unlike many internet mysteries, ErraTas never concluded with a dramatic reveal, it simply faded.
What do we actually know?
Separating fact from speculation is remarkably difficult because what is known is surprisingly limited. A cryptic website existed.
